Best way to ask for financial support for a non-church-based mission trip?

I am affiliated with a church, but the funds will not go to the church to fund me to go, but to ME instead. Our church is small and this trip is only 4 of us going to minister in Connecticut. In my support letter, is it weird for me to ask family to write the check to my name rather than the organization I am affiliated with? Would explaining all this in the letter be dumb?

Update:

Our church is very small and has financial issues on its own, so it is not going to be funded at all by our church. We are simply representing our church's name while we are there (we are all on the leadership team). The money would not be "for me" at all, it would simply cover the cost of getting there, staying there, and coming back...

IF your church has no part in your mission.... then do not mention them at all..... .IF... your Church is sponsoring the mission then the funds should go to the Church.... and they will cover the expenses.... if you need personal expenses then you should clearly state that........ If the church is sponsoring then they need donations to be made clearly designated for that missions...if you are asking family not affiliated with the church to help you personally... then make it clear that the money is for you........ but state also that The Mission... through the church... also needs donations.....
