Ukelele Painting Tips?

I'm getting my sister a Ukelele for christmas, nothing fancy, just a $30 one from Guitar Center, as she's never had one before and I think she'd like it because she's really artsy and musical.

That being said, I need tips on painting designs on the Uke, so I don't drastically ruin the instrument by accident.

Also, any suggestions as to designs to make it more fun and personal (designs don't have to be personal) would be great.

Thanks in advance! :)

Ukuleles CAN be painted, but it should be done as part of the finishing process, and under the final coat of varnish. Painting aftermarket is not such a good idea.

That being said, if you are still determined to proceed, I would recommend something more like a gloss lacquer ink (like the kind used to decorate hockey sticks) but be aware any changes you make could negatively affect sound quality. Or you could use colored sharpies.

    Hello there,

If you want to hang it on the wall to look at, go ahead and paint it. But if you intend for the uke to be played, do not paint it.
