Fluid in lungs? How serious?

My dad's in the hospital and he has fluid in his lungs. How serious is it?

Is it easily fixed? His mom died of a heart attack when she was 75..and he's just 50.

He doesn't smoke and he's not out of shape or anything

Fluid in the lungs in never a good sign as you need your airways to be open for gas exchange and has a number of causes.

1.It could be due to a heart condition which is causing fluid to back up into the lungs rather then being pushed to the body

2.There is an infection or imflammatory process that is causing fluid to leak out of his lungs.

    3. He has a liver problem (which makes protein to help in keeping fluids into the vessels)

    4. He has a kidney problem(loosing that same protein)

    5. some cancers can release water saving proteins and hence make the body a water bag,

but then again you have to give us a detailed history, it is not advised to come to a conclusion without having enough information.

Hope this helps and Hope your dad gets well soon.

    have a good day

Does he have heart disease? Sounds like maybe he is in heart failure.....it is very serious. They can give him diuretics to get rid of most of the fluid in his lungs, especially if its from heart failure. That will give him some relief and help him to breath better.
