Why can't I upload YouTube videos in 1080P? Or even 720p?

I record video game footage, and I do so in HD 1080p, the whole deal. I've got the right equipment and when I watch the footage after I record it, it's in beautiful, perfect high def. But...when I actually upload it to YouTube, the maximum resolution it will let me watch it in is 480p and it looks horrible. I use the Hauppauge HD PVR and my process is as follows:

Record footage

Import footage into iMovie

Edit footage, including voiceover/commentary

Export/share movie by clicking share in iMovie menu, then selecting "Large (960x540)"

Upload

Now...at first I assumed the issue was popping up in the export/share step, especially because videos that I upload right away (as in, clips that I don't edit in iMovie at all) I can watch in 1080p...but even when I watch this particular edited video on my computer (as in the file itself, not the clip on YouTube) it looks pretty good still. It loses SOME resolution, but not a lot...not so much that I shouldn't be able to watch the video in better resolution than 480p anyway.

Can anyone help me with this?

Update:

Adding this little bit...I did find a suggested way to have higher quality videos, but the exporting process takes an estimated seven hours. There has to be a better way, no?

Large setting is 960 x 540 --- it is not HD.

    HD is either 720p -1280 x 720 or full HD 1080p -1920 x 1080.

If you have imported into iMovie at the large setting, then you have substantially reduced the quality and you cannot then reverse that and export in HD.

Go into iMovie > Preferences > Video and change the 'Import HD video as' setting to: Full - Original Size. That will preserve the HD nature of your video.

Then you will be able to Share your project in the same size as you imported it.

    Best,

PS I don't know the power of your computer or the length of your movie but 7 hours is not unreasonable for iMovie.

If you want better, then you have to buy Final Cut Pro X at $300.

Try logging out of your YouTube account, and then see if you can change the resolution to 1080p without being logged in. You might not be able to see it in 1080p, but your viewers should be able to (that's a bug that's been going on YouTube, so try that first). And, iMovie sometimes can reduce the frame size too. Other then that, I have no idea what the problem could be unless the HD is taking a while to process, but that's just a shot in the dark.
