Do buddhist believe in higher beings/entities?

I know some sects have gods but how buddhism originally started, it did not have gods. I am asking for the ones that do not have gods, do they believe in higher beings. Is an enlightened person considered a higher being? and what would qualify as a higher being in buddhism.

Also if you can answer is buddha considered a higher being and do offerings and prayers to buddha count as worshiping a higher being.

I think it depends on your definition of "higher being and worship". Do they need to be eternal? creator? have access to our world and grant our wishes?

Theravada Buddhism doesn't believe in the existence of an eternal creator that never dies. Theravada also doesn't believe in an eternal Buddha after death. However, in Theravada teaching, there are devas who may qualify as higher beings. Devas are beings of higher intellect, ability, appearance, etc. But they are not permanent. Like all beings, they die when their time is up. Human vs. devas are comparable to monkeys considering men as higher beings. So there may be some Theravada Buddhists who give offerings to Deva expecting favorable returns. But the best action that Buddha himself encouraged regarding Deva is spreading loving kindness (metta) towards them. We can think of it as giving presents to our neighbors without any cost to us.

An enlightened person is just another being who is different because they lack unwholesome mental states and have peaceful existence (Nibbana) unlike normal beings. Buddha was also one of the enlightened people. But enlightened people are not creators and don't have eternal life either. When they reach the end of life, they stop existing as mind and matter. So they cannot come back to us and grant our wishes or help us. So it is up to you to decide whether they qualify as higher being according to your definition.

Theravada teaches that donating (offering foods), showing respect (paying homage, worshiping?) to enlightened people will generate very big good actions and consequences because they have more wholesome mental states than normal people and lack negative mentality. It is comparable to funding a red cross which I think is a better action than funding a mercenary group who might do good some of the time and bad some of the time.

When people present offerings to Buddha or Buddha relics, they are trying to do good actions, not because Buddha can use food. That practice may be considered an easier form of meditation method known as Buddhanussati where one meditates on the positive qualities of Buddha together with the image of him in the mind. Those who imagine the image of Buddha and present offerings to Buddha or pagoda will have peaceful and wholesome minds during the act and they can be very strong actions (kamma) especially if the pagoda contains actual relics. So it is not Buddha who will take their offerings and grant wishes in return. It is that kamma which will reward them with desirable consequences. Again, it is up to you to decide whether they qualify as 'worshiping a higher being' since I don't know your definition. It also depends on the knowledge level of practicing Buddhist as some may treat Buddha as higher being and expect some return for their offerings.

thats a complicated question and its a very annoying one. There is no original Buddhism, Theravada is an institution that arose long time after the Buddha lived. even then, the Theravadins mention vedic deities and in Sri Lanka a Buddhist might make offerings to Hindu deities.

there is not any "unique Buddhism" purely fyi. And thats a complicated question, the overall answer is not any yet there are qualifiers. the it isn't someone or a personality, besides the indisputable fact that it may well be stated as "Buddha" and for this reason possibly it does. yet that is "Buddha" in a a lot grander time period than purely the historic man or woman. we received't truly recognize till we attain a level of awakening to the point that we may be able to recognize. a number of our stuff is "you'll locate out later, for now do no longer complication about it". as to does it count number as worshiping a larger ability, i wager thats a count number of opinion. there is not any ability break free what human beings are able to experiencing.
