Fellow atheists: how can I get my kids in the Christmas spirit while staying true to its factual history?
I keep explaining to them that Jesus wasn't born on the 25th, (more likely in the spring) that instead the chosen date was likely a compromise that the early church made to appeal to Romans that worshiped Saturnalia or Sol Invictus, that Christmas was once as late as January 6th, and that the holiday's deepest roots probably have more to do with the winter solstice than anything else. But they just keep whining on about wanting presents. What am I doing wrong? Is 4 and 6 years old too young to explain the true meaning of Xmas??

Dear ungrateful, greedy, snotty small human:
Once upon a time people celebrated the natural occurrence of the winter solstice. Over the centuries, many human organizations hostilely took over this event for their own power mad agendas.
Currently, major corporations own the holiday for their own greedy purposes.
If you want that freaking lap top & the new version of XBox, get a paper route.
Sincerely,
Your exhausted parental unit.

The thought of parallel universes comes from two places. The first is a mathematical system used to resolve perturbation concept calculations in quantum mechanics of "summing over all possible worlds". Some attempt to literally interpret this as which means all these possible worlds exist. However, they do not come up in non-perturbative remedies, so they are more competently viewed mathematical artefacts. The 2d is from powerful theory. Here strings were generalised to planes referred to as branes, and these allow for more universes than our possess. Their is not any proof, and the mathematics is esoteric - as soon as again they will well jsut be a mathematical artefact. Nonetheless, the possibility of multiple universes appeals to a few since of the obvious excellent tuning of the universe. If the legal guidelines of nature have been just a bit one of a kind then life would not exist in it. The explanation for this will likely good quite simply be that the laws are constant in a mathematical manner we've no longer yet unearthed. On the other hand, the universe could well have cycled through many lives, most of that have been unstable or did not support existence.

If you have spent the last 4-6 years with the meaning of Christmas being "presents" then yes, they will have trouble seeing anything else at this age. For each person Christmas has its own meaning. For us, it has nothing to do with the winter solstice or somebody's attempt at getting out of being executed for adultery, it is all about spending time with family and general relaxation after a busy year.

Presents are a relatively new part of Christmas, but the food, the party, the fun all go back long before Christianity.
Tell your kids about the Roman tradition of the Lord of Misrule: the week or so after Christmas when they get to tell you what to do, choose all the food, set their own bedtime .....
Most kids could really get off on that idea.

Whatever it takes to make it magical for them. That's the true meaning of Xmas/Solstice - that when the world is at its darkest and most inhospitable, we can provide for ourselves warmth, bright lights, food and merriment.
And we even have enough surplus wealth to give presents. There must be presents. Spare them the Anthropology and History lessons till they are a bit older.
And don't ditch the Xmas story altogether - it is very magical, and Christmas carols are beautiful.

I'm sorry but, I never needed to know the history of Christmas to enjoy the holidays. They want toys, presents and candy, not a history lesson.
Make the holidays about Santa and family, not religion and it should be all good

If this is a real question, you're just not communicating with them. Why don't you ask them what they think Christmas is, why it exists on the calendar, what it means to them and why? Ask about what they remember from last Christmas. You are just lecturing them and they're probably tuning you out. You don't want to be tuned out when it gets to things that might be a little more relevant, e.g. drugs, sex and rock and roll.

It's not like they really know when he was born anyway, or have any proof that he existed at all apart from a collection of stories written many years after. I don't think you have anymore proof he wasn't born on the 25th than for if he was

Sir you are right to install the Christmas spirit via facts, made me the man I am today. Some may call me a monster but at least my ears are not besieged with "Waaaaaaa I won't a playstation-gizmo, Waaaaaaaaa this ipod-otron is broken" A small price to pay I'm sure you'll agree. Tip top.
