    its decent enough...but not lavish...if you know what i mean.

    let me help you with a budget.

    small car + insurance + fuel = R 2500 per month

    decent apartment to Rent = R 4500 per month

    Rates + water and lights = R 1000 per month

    Food + toiletries + detergents = R 2000 per month

    Cellphone = R 500 per month

    household insurance = R 300 per month

    Total --> R 10 800 for the bare essentials.

    Note, luxuries include:

    Internet = R 800 per month

    DSTV = R 650 per month

    Clothing account = R 400 per month

    Entertainment = R 1500 per month

    Total --> R 3350 for luxuries so far

    You will need other things like:

    - TV license (like R 20 a month) --> argh crap! I need to get this for myself

    - Considering you moving here, you gonna need to get furniture and appliances somehow (you can take this on credit, but i wouldnt if i were you)

    - other things that will throw a curve ball is if you get yourself a chick, and make her pregnant! school fees / nanny care, nappies and those type of things will add to your budget.

    I rate R22 000 gross is very doable. you are considered middle class in south africa with that level of salary....its decent enough for one person to live off.

    Not an overly insightful answer ... but here goes:

    I used to earn R12500 (my boss was a cow) and I could not move out of my parents house. I budgeted that if I moved out, I would need about R22 000 -R25 000 or flat share at a salary of about R17500.

    If you plan it right and don't mind a middle class living, then you will be fine.

    Also flat share is actually very good as it adds to security. If you move into a 3 bedroom flat then your rent is even "cheaper" as it will be split 3 ways (although not all that much better).

    You should also consider the area you are moving to. You could end up paying R3000 rent a month or R9000 rent a month (location, location, location)

    Hope that answer is of some use to you.

    You know, it really all depends, is this after deductions? What type of lifestyle do you lead? For some single guys who go clubbing, drinking, smoking, it can take quite a chunk out of your wallet. especially south african's who like to party. for me, that would be more than enough because I don't do those things, I don't eat out much either because I enjoy my own cooking. it really depends on where you'l be living, if you have a car, stuff like that. it's hard to answer the question actually

    Yes, if you budget well, you will survive well. There is a lot of bargains or cheaper options as a consumer. I agree with David Jane's rough budget.

    Foreigners, on a contract, don't pay UIF and you won't get unemployment insurance. Also its a 1% so R 220.00.

    R 3,675 Paye.

    Yes, provided you don't go crazy on accommodation. R18000 is about average for an office worker in a fairly senior position.

    The cost of living varies a lot between cities.

    David has ir more or less right except I would say he is on average 20% low on all his estimates. Those are figures for around 2 or 3 years ago.
