The effects of cigarettes?

I smoke a pack a day and i was wondering if the effects are as bad as people say? Is smoking really that bad for you or do people exagerate?

I smoked. I liked it. I used any and every excuse in the book to defend them.

I do think that there is more hype than is fair out there about cigarettes. And it annoys me when if you go to the Dr they ask if you smoke and if you say YES then they stop looking for other reasons and blame the cigarettes. I also think then the governments are going to be in a terrible pickle when no one smokes and they are still getting these diseases they are blaming on cigarettes.

Now I have done defending the cigarettes. So much has been found out that I think it can't all be lies. I have lived life as a smoker and I have lived life as a non smoker.

I can tell you truthfully that when I used to smoke then I did used to get dreadful chest infections each winter and every time I got a cold I ended up with a bad painful cough.

These days I very rarely get colds and chest infections are a rarity and if I cold get one its over and done before you can notice.

I can walk up and down steps much better than I used to and I do feel better in myself since I stopped smoking. I think its worth the effort.

If the better health is from the lack of poisons in the tobacco and the additives they put in the cigarettes, or if its down to the lack of smoking not destroying the vitamins I take in food then I have no idea.

I think on balance probably - between you and I I would say its better to give them up. I know I am glads and theres a list some place on the web for how much your body recoveres over what length of time. For instance I think ten years after your last cigarette its like you never smoked.

But just as an aside to this - on numerous places I have seen that smokers and ex-smokers are strongly advised to up their intake of carrots as it really helps to combat lung damage.
