Here's a nice, learned article that basically ascribes the use of shoot to the similarity of cameras to guns.

This is very interesting. I don't think anything that is true art can go too far. As far as whether or not these photos are art is something I'm not qualified to answer. I can tell you if I like them or not, which would be subjective, but liking something doesn't make it art. Art can be judged objectively by critiquing certain aspects like form. In the music world, Classical music (or as it is more properly titled, Western Art Music) a piece of music's artistic value is based on things like its structure, form, modulation, theme, etc; however, beauty or likableness is not a part of the criteria. There are a lot of works of art music that many people just don't like, but they are some of the greatest works of musical art ever. These photos may offend people, but sometimes that's what art does. They didn't seem pornographic to me, and I would think that that would be a criterion in judging their artistic value. But like I said, I'm not qualified. In reference to the starving dog... that's just reprehensible. It's something that gives art a bad name in the eyes of the masses. The fact that someone suffered for such a purpose makes it devoid of any artistic meaning. In fact, it sullies it.

Probably because of the need to aim at a target and try to catch it at the right instant. I feel fairly sure that all the early outdoor photographers who tromped the west (or photographed the war) had the same terminology in mind in hunting a picture as they did in hunting for a prize or a meal.

Because the CANNON means big guns or artillery that shoot towards the target and if the target is moving the shooter has to wait or have some patience to shoot otherwise the target will miss..... and canon making good cameras and whatever the camera is that also target to take pictures and so similar to the gun ... that is why we call photography is shooting... in my point of view my Canon D700 T5i is my weapon.....

After you've done your 'shoot' don't you also wish for a 'hanging''?

Not really asking and not really answering, just saying.

When you are done, you say, "Shoot! I hope my pictures come out!"

Duh! Because cameras feel like guns.Does anybody else feel like your loading a weapon when you put your battery in? Or when you're using a telephoto lens, don't you pretend you're a sniper?
