Here is a comparison between what Mormons believe and what the Bible (and Christians) teach:

LDS: God (Elohim) was once a man

Bible: God is omniscient and all powerful and eternal and is Spirit

LDS: The first offspring of Almighty God (Elohim) and his wife was Jehovah, who became Jesus

Bible: God has no wife and has never procreated ‘children’ or other beings

LDS: Jesus was born just as all people are born. He is not the eternal, only a god

Bible: Jesus Christ is eternal and was not created. He was born as a man but not as all people are born – no human father was involved. Jesus is part of the One Being who is God

LDS: The Holy Ghost is a spirit person but does not have the qualities of God

Bible: The Holy Spirit is the third person of the Trinity and was not created

LDS: The Bible is accurate only as far as it has been translated properly, but the Book of Mormon, given to Joseph Smith, is more accurate

Bible: The Bible is God’s unchanging inspired word – all of it – and no other written word has been issued by God

LDS: There are three levels of salvation, all dependent on works, or lack of works

Bible: Salvation is a complete and finished work in Christ, a free gift of grace that cannot be earned

LDS: Man’s destiny is to one of three heavens / kingdoms but no-one knows what resurrection they will get

Bible: There is only one destiny for those whom God calls into his kingdom and they are promised a glorified resurrection body

LDS: There is no place of eternal torment (hell)

Bible: Those who are not saved are condemned to a place of eternal torment- Luke 16:19 to end

LDS: Man had a pre-existent life before being born into the world

Bible: Man was not pre-existent before he was born on earth

LDS: The Aaronic and Melchizedek priesthoods have been restored to LDS, giving them their authority

Bible: Jesus Christ is our great High Priest, like Melchizedek – he is our authority and has done away with temple worship and the priesthood

LDS: Only temple-sealed, married Mormons who remain faithful to all Mormon requirements will attain the celestial kingdom

Bible: All Christians are sealed with the Holy Spirit at conversion and become born again into God’s family and will be with Christ in heaven

The word "Catholic" simply means everywhere physical and spiritual. When Christ founded the Church, there was one Church everywhere. Hence it was called the Catholic Church. Christians were first called by this name at Antioch in Syria. In time, disputes within the Church among men led to divisions. Today, the terms catholic and apostolic can legitimately be claimed by the Roman Catholic Church, the Eastern Orthodox Churches, the Oriental Orthodox Churches, and the Churches of the East as each of these can trace their history and bishops back to the Apostles from which they received their faith.

The term "Christian" originally applied to the disciples of Christ and those of the Apostles and their successors. Today it is also claimed by many heretical groups however those mentioned above which have apostolic connections can legitimately claim the title.

Mormons were founded by Joseph Smith in the 19th century after he claimed to receive a revelation wherein God revealed to him that all religions were wrong and that Christ had visited America many centuries ago. Smith was then charged with restoring true religion to the earth according to him. Most Christians reject Mormons as Christians because they treat the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit as 3 separate deities which are part of one divine family of God, whereas Christians believe that the Holy Trinity is one God who eternally exists in 3 hypostasis (which is usually translated persons however this is somewhat misleading in English as it is different to prosopa which means people).

I feel all Christians frequently have their own beliefs and denominations so many Christians have extraordinary beliefs. What separates Mormonism is that they suppose in restoration through Joseph Smith, the original prophet of the church. They've beliefs in different doctrines like the e-book of Mormon whereas most non-Mormon Christians would agree that the Bible is the only phrase of God. Mormon is a Christian faith because they suppose in Jesus as the son of God and savior, and that he died for the sins of mankind. It is the additional things that vary from typical Christianity. To a Christian frequently faith and your relationship with Jesus is just right adequate, Mormons you must have baptism, temple ordinances, marriage sealing, and you go to judgment and are assigned one of the vital three kingdoms of Glory.

Christians are basically people who have faith in, believe in, follow and try to live their life as Christ did and would. Christian, catholic, protestant, mormon ALL believe in Jesus Christ as their Savior but as individuals DO they all have different perceptions, doctrines, views about the nature of God and the relationship between God, Jesus Christ, the Holy Ghost and Mankind. Instead of recognizing that such differences are not BAD they usually point and bash, persecute and belittle one another because they believe they are EACH SO RIGHT! It's rather unchristian of those who do so....

Different strokes for different folks - GOD alone knows the complete truth at this point and we won't know it all til we leave this life and meet HIM so I say show some respect for the differences in other people's religious beliefs and needs and thank Heaven that we have the FREE AGENCY GOD GAVE US ALL to choose Him and know Him personally and uniquely in this life!

Catholicism is the original christian denomination, so the difference between catholic and christian is that "catholic" describes a specific group of christians while "christian" describes all denominations eg. baptist or anglican. They all believe in the bible and Jesus Christ but only catholics acknowledge the Virgin Mary, have rosary beads, and have bread & wine at communion. Mormons follow the Book of Mormon which was written more recently, they also believe in the bible, but their beliefs are different from christians because of their book. Mormons also call their church the Church of the Latter-Day Saints.

Mormons follow the Church of Christ as he organized when He lived on earth, but it since has been corrupted, water-down and apostasy ridden.

Just as the Bible predicted, the earth required a "restoration" of the truth. And that restoration did happen beginning in 1820 and is found in the LDS Church.

Catholics have dropped certain Christian beliefs and added others during the last thousand years. They have rejected modern revelation, and rely on popular vote. Protestants are a Catholic reformation, and still reject any revelation from God, relying on their traditions, and their interpretation of the Bible. Mormons, or Latter-Day Saints are a latter-day restoration of Christ's original church. The LDS church was restored through the calling of new prophets and apostles, the receipt of a new book of scripture, and the visitation of angels.

    @Nous:

Do Christians have to wear silly underwear to go to church?

Most people aren’t as concerned with underwear as you are. I’ve been a Mormon my whole life and no one has ever asked to see my underwear. I’m sure in your congregation if you asked to see everyone’s underwear as they came in the door, most of it would be pretty silly.

Do Christians have to avoid various foods and drinks?

I certainly hope so, although poisonous substances may get you to heaven a bit quicker. I don’t really think your advocating that Christians eat dogs, cats, or mice?

Do Christians have to prove they are fervent believers before they are allowed into church?

Probably not, and neither do Mormons. As a matter of fact you can attend an LDS Church service without even being a “Mormon” believer.

Do Christians have to ban anyone from entering church that is not totally committed?

Again I would hope not, there are a number of people I know that haven’t been to church for many years (not much commitment there). None of them are banned, as a matter of fact I would greatly welcome them back, regardless of their commitment.

Do Christians act as if their religion is some sort of secret society by banning non members from their churches?

Again neither organization does that, you seem to be repeating yourself. All are welcome to attend an LDS Church service, even people like yourself.

Do Christians believe they will become gods?

YES THEY DO! Jesus is God, and most Christians are trying really hard to be like Jesus? Do you try to be like Jesus? Do you believe God is immortal, sinless, and resurrected? Most Christians do, they also believe when they get to heaven they too will have these god-like qualities.

Compare the bible and Christian beliefs with the Mormon book and beliefs and it is as plain as day that Mormons only claim to be Christian because they are afraid to stand up as an entirely separate religion!

Why would we separate ourselves from what we are, Christian. What would you have us claim to be, we read and follow the teachings of Jesus Christ in the New Testament. He is our Savior just as he is yours, and because we have a little more information on the life of Jesus doesn’t mean we are no longer Christian, LOL.

Seen the advertisements with people doing everyday things with the line “and they are Mormon”? Seems the Mormon hierarchy recognize that they are seen not just as an extremist cult but also different to other people!

Ya, we are certainly different. Instead of just merely saying were Christian, we live it. And that lifestyle is very foreign to today’s society, because they don’t see good morals in traditional Christian lifestyles any more, sad really.

Mitt Romney has publicly stated he does not care about the 46 MILLION Americans that live below the poverty line! What a heartless and cold sect it must be?!

And he never said that, you’re misrepresenting the facts, but that’s typical of frustrated, critical people.

Mormonism is closer to scientology than Christianity!

Don’t really know what to say about this, except that if you are so far off on the above examples it only makes sense that this last one is really absurd too.

Apple is to Fruit, as Mormon is to Christian

But what you mean is "what is the difference between Mainstream Christianity and the Latter-day Saints"

There are lots of differences. And even more similarities.

The LDS conference talks I have provided are extraordinarily relevant to your question.

Jesus Christ said if you love Me, keep My commandments.

Members of THE Church Of JESUS CHRIST Of Latter Day Saints

believe in everything that Jesus Christ believes in.

Mormons believe in the purest pure kind of love. Mormons believe in eternal love.

Mormons believe in all that is good and holy in the Universe.

Mormons believe that love between a man and woman in marriage is forever and ever and ever, for those who are married in a Temple of Jesus Christ.
