creative ideas to keep dogs off a couch?

Looking for some creative ideas to keep the dog off the couch. She will not go on it when I am home, but the minute I leave, she jumps up. I have come back into the house to get something 5 min after leaving, and find everything that was on the couch, on the floor.

I tried boxes on top, and she pulled them off.

Otherwise, she is excellent in the house.

Currently I have one of those plastic rugs with the little blunt spikes on it- it is face up, and weighed down by about 10 lbs on both sides- she will dig at it until it falls on the floor, and is starting to ruin my couch back from digging at the rug.

I am looking for something relatively inexpensive.

Any suggestions?

Training is key...it's impractical to have to put something on your sofa every time you leave the house, to keep the dog off...my dogs are allowed on my furniture and I keep my sofa and loveseat covered with bed sheets that match the upholstry (so they are easy to wash, and the dogs aren't getting the furniture dirty)...however, if I didn't want them on the sofas and they wouldn't behave when I was away, they'd be crated when I wasn't home...

Check on the web for pet gates... I found some that went up to 84" and maybe even larger. They have walk through gates for you made in them and are not bad looking either. They do have some tall ones too. Or you can just get a couple of cheap blankets ( I got mine at goodwill for like 5 bucks) and cover your couches during the day.. this way the fur and drool don't get on your couch and you can wash the blankets regularly.. good luck !!

Is there any way you can keep her out of that room with a baby gate/close the door? My couch has loose cushions so I prop the seat cushoins up to block the dog from laying on it. I think this will be an uphill battle for you...Put a blanket over the couch to keep it clean when you're gone? :)

Well, it made me smile. Before the bull terrier, I had a lovable mutt. He loved the couch. Well I was determined to keep him off. One nite I flipped all the kitchen chairs on the couch and put the vacuum cleaner next to the couch. He hated the vacuum. Guess where he was sleeping all nite. On the couch!.

You could give the chairs a try. Good luck.

Get a couple of mouse traps. Set them to go off and cover with a heavy sheet. When the dog jumps on the couch, the traps will spring, making a loud noise and hopefully keep the dog from repeating the couch sitting.

My ex hated the dogs getting on the bed so I started putting aluminum foil on it while we were out. It worked for my dogs but it sounds like yours is very determined. Maybe get an old ottoman from goodwill so that he has his own couch?

There certian types of smell sprays you can put on the couch like spray deodrants. They irritate the dogs nosie and try to keep away from it. It does not harm them.

I like what first lady suggested, its a way to scare them away from the temptation of wanting to be on couch.. i'm gonna try that too. thanks
