Logarithms! I am completely blank?

The log of a number is a diff number all together. But given that number how would you find the previous number. I guess I am confused.

But I tried to find log for 1e-3

It came out to be -3.

But given -3 how would you find 1e-3

Please answer I am totally confused

    When you see 1e-3 on your calculator, that means 1 x 10^-3, which is scientific notation. If you are asked to find the log of 10^-3, just remember that a logarithm IS an exponent, so as long as you are in base 10, the answer will be whatever the exponent is, in this case, -3.

    If you were asked to find the log of 1E-5, the answer would be -5.
