Is it better to file for unemployment benefits online or in person?

I will file for unemployment for the first time (illinois), should I go to the office, or is online fine?

I would think taking 5 minutes to do it from your cell phone is easier. I know someone who filed from their cell phone from a cruise in the Caribbean. That was easier.

Filing your initial claim online is certainly the more convenient and popular choice. Your claim is not going to be processed the same day it's submitted whether you do it online or in person. You should expect to wait a month or so for your initial claim to be investigated. If you file online you will not be waiting in line. I recommend filing online.

What information do I need to file an Unemployment Insurance claim online?

Social Security Number and Name as it appears on your Social Security card,

If claiming your spouse or child as a dependent, the Social Security Number, Date of Birth and name of dependent(s),

Employer's name, mailing address, phone numbers, employment dates, and separation reason for all the employers you worked for in the last 18 months,

If you are not a United States citizen, your Alien Registration Information,

If you worked since Sunday of this week, the amount of gross wages earned this week. (You must report all gross wages for any work performed, full or part-time. Gross wages are the amount earned before any deductions, not "take home pay". Wages in the form of lodging, meals, merchandise or any other form should be included. Gross wages must be reported the week in which they are earned, not the week in which you receive the wages. If your gross wages earned in any week are less than your weekly benefit amount, you still may be eligible to receive a full or partial benefit payment), and,

If you are a recently separated veteran, bring in the Member 4 Copy of the DD form 214 / 215.

What information do I need to file an Unemployment Insurance claim at my local office or WorkNet center?

In addition to everything listed above, you will need to bring two forms of identification, at least one containing your Social Security number.

Applying online should have been enough. You are going to get these blue envelopes that say NON Negotiable for a while that tells you to call in. On the date it says call You call and then it will tell you when you will be issued a check. If you don't see anything within another week I would call to find out whats going on. Good luck

In most states, you cannot do it in person. If you go to an office, they might let you use one of their computers to do it online or let you use one of their phones to do it on the phone. But they probably won't let you do anything that you can't do at home, and you may have to wait longer.

I think its more convenient and easier to go online. It may take forever and a day at the local office.

Although online is convenient, I personally prefer going in person for things that require filling out forms. You could have questions that you might not find the answers to online, you may find you need to fill out additional forms. I'm in Australia and I know the system is slightly different, but in person is still best if you don't mind waiting in lines.

Source(s): Been there, done unemployment. It's not easy, neither is filling out a ridiculous amount of forms online!

If you know what you are doing you NEVER EVER EVER want to go into the UE office unless they ask you to.

Makes the DMV look like Candyland...........

American UE offices are under staffed, overworked, phone ringing off the hook, crowded waiting hells.

    Online. Much easier, much faster.
