Large gaps in stone fireplace.?

I have a fireplace with a stone back wall. I was doing renovations in the room behind it and removed a section of the wall to reveal that those stones aren't set properly and there are many holes in between them along with loose stones. I'd like to know the best way to fill those holes. My first thought was something like spray foam but I wouldn't want that near a fireplace.

Thanks.

The stones probably weren't loose until you removed what they were set against. I would suggest using an grout bag. It's like a frosting piping bag for cake decorating, only larger. I have attached a link of what I am referring to.

sounds like you have major problems with this fireplace. do not use this fireplace ! carbon monoxide gases or fire could easily result. you need to do alot of research to determine the proper repairs or better yet, call in someone to inspect this unit that builds fireplaces for a living.
