Are they obligated to give me my full medical records if I request them?

If I request my medical records from my doctor (my psychiatrist specifically) they are required to give me my complete records aren't they? Do they charge for that? Thank you for answering :)

Update:

I should specify, I understand that what they give me will be a copy not my original file, but my concern is that they will not give me a complete copy with everything and I'm asking if they have to do that not just some of it.

Update 2:

Also want to add, the reason I'm asking, is I am looking for a new doctor as mine has done nothing for me for years now and I need to find someone more willing to help me look for a solution rather than just nod and say uhm-hmm for fifteen minutes and then say, well I'll see you in four or five months. I am no longer trusting of this doctor and I want to see what is in my records.

They can charge for that. (Some states dictate how much they can charge.) They are NOT required to give you their notes on their thoughts about your case, but notes from what you say, insurance forms, etc., they are required UNLESS they feel it would be harmful to you to have them. (This applies especially in mental health cases.)

Generally, they prefer to send the records to your doctor, new shrink, etc.

They won't give you originals, they will give your copies.

They are required to provide by law. But they may charge a nominal fee for the making copies and the time required. Some doctors will do it for free.

Most people will charge you for a copy of your records, didn't use too but almost everyone does now and yes they are obligated to give you a copy of everything they have on you.

They will charge you, most certainly.

They are obliged to give you most of your records, but they do not have to provide you with their personal notes on your file.

Yes, they must give you a copy of your file, and they can charge you a copy fee.
