What happened to the 928 engine?
When emissions restrictions made air cooling no longer practical, Porsche came up with the 928 V-8 engine. While that did not sell as anticipated, and the flat waterboxer became the popular popular solution, what happened to the V-8? Now that V-8s are available from the Cayenne to the Touareg, VW Phaeton, etc., do they share any history with the 928 engine?

Some but very little. Todays Porsche V8's are at least two generations of engine technology removed from the latest 928 V8 which was a 5.4L engine.

There is some relation to the older 928 engine, yes but it's certainly much more advanced.
