How do I get my 2 year old male german shepherd to gain weight?
It's easier to keep my female fat while she's feeding puppies than is to get his weight up to normal. He does better on "dog chow" than other brands but it's still not good enough. I've dewormed him with safeguard, panacur and parentel pomoate. Right now I'm feeding him an egg a day mixed with olive oil, alfalfa powder and kelp powder and all the dog food and fresh water he wants. Any other ideas?

I don't have a dog that underweight, so I'm not sure what I'd do.. If you have ruled out a disease that may hinder his health, I would definately try some natural remedies to try to straighten out his metabolism. It looks as if you have been going in that direction, already.
*I would try some type of probiotic. Like the ones they sell for horses, just try to go according to weight.. Perhaps, he just needs a 'boost'.
* Try to give him several small meals a day, rather than 1-2 large meals
* Brewers or Nutritional Yeast, would be a good starter, also.
*And what about Selenium. He just might need a tiny bit of that mineral or a tablet every day.
I* may try Corn oil in his dog food. Maybe starting out at 1 Tbls. for a week and eventually go up to 1/8 cup.
*Also, try to get him to eat raw meat of some kind, bones, or liver.
I don't know if I have been any help to you or not, but hopefully your dog will get better... May God bless you!!!

Even at 2 years, he may still have some time to go before he's fully bodied up. Some bloodlines are slow maturing so this may be what's going on - have you spoken to his breeder, did you see her stock? GSDs can have dietary problems too, so rather than pile in all kinds of supplements, I'd be in touch with other GSD owners and ask what they feed, successfully, and use the same. I can't advise you re brand because I'm in the UK, but no doubt others will - but be aware, not all food suits all dogs so even if it works for some people, it may not be the case with your dog.
I'd also talk to your vet - it might be worth having a full blood workup done at this point, if he feels you are right about his weight - but again, this may just be a growth stage he's going through. By the time he's 3, he may look far more as you hope.
ps If he's around entire females, this won't be helping his weight - entire males can lose tons of condition when around bitches in season.

i had the same problem with mine. try mixing at least a cup of rich puppy food with his meals until he gets his desired weight. then try mixing the fat from the meats you eat with his food to keep the weight. this will also help make his coat all shiny and smooth.
however, if this does not work, the you may have to go to your family vet and find the reason.

My shepherd is a typical finicky eater and is always losing weight so I make satin balls and feed them to him with his breakfast to keep him at a healthy weight. See recipe here http://www.holisticdog.org/Nutrition/Satinballs/sa...
