Advise for moving to Alaska!?

Ok so my best friend and I are planning on moving to Alaska around early August 2013. We are travelling by road from Kentucky so we can experience the country. We've decided to sell most of our possessions and just start new once we arrive. A few questions- Anchorage or Fairbanks. I know Fairbanks is considered the "true" Alaska, but we are in our early 20s, and will need to find good work once we arrive and find an apartment. So in which city would be have more chances? And what areas would be the cheapest as far as housing? Any other tips would be greatly appreciated.

Anchorage. If you move to Fairbanks straight from Kentucky you may feel like you've bitten off more than you can chew (consider -50F for months at a time, it's easier said than done). Anchorage is a larger city, so you're going to have an easier time of finding housing and work. Cheapest housing is in Fairveiw, Spenard, and Mountain View, but their cheap for a reason and if you can afford it, try to stay away from Fairview and Mountain View at the least. If you want to get out of the city, you could look into houses in the Wasilla and Palmer or Eagle River/Chugiak. However, keep in mind you'll most likely work in Anchorage, and the drive into town can be long in the winter and traffic can get backed up, especially around JBER (Joint Base Elmendorf Richardson) during rush hour when everyone is trying to get on and off base. Good luck, hope you like it here.

Uhhh have fun with that drive.

No offense to Alaska as it is very beautiful there, but why do you and your friend want to live there? I know people in Alaska and they would be wondering the same thing...
