What are the differences between covered and uncovered humbuckers?

I think all you need to know to answer this is in the title.I'd figure it out myself, but I only have 1 guitar, and the closest guitar store is, well, not close, so...

Thanks for the answers guys.I'm probably going to buy a Les Paul within the next months, and I've been thinking of removing the bridge pup cover a la Jimmy Page style.Since it will only add to the badassness, I'll do it.I can't really choose a best answer, since I found them all really helpful.Thank you again!

    Clapton took his pickup covers off on his Les Paul during the Cream/Bluesbreakers era i heard it helps the tone breathe

    Some folks think removing the covers gives a brighter sound, while others find there's no difference.
