Can you share media content with only a wireless router? No modem or internet?

I want to stream videos/music between my laptop and xbox 360. They are already connected previously at house with internet and xbox live. But i'm visiting family and wanted to stream movies.

Can I just plug in a wireless router and have both the laptop and xbox connect to the router and stream through a "LAN" connection? If so, how?

I've never tried that, but in theory yes you should be able to. You should just need to connect the devices to the LAN ports on the router so that they each get an IP address and are visible to each other. They may report connection issues since they won't be able to access the Internet but they should be able to share content between them.
