Thoughts on "why" there is belief in a god?

Basic desire to survive?

I can understand why god(s) were created and that humans marveled at what they got good or bad. My thought is that the real driving force to belief is a desire to survive. I think we are the only animals with such an evolved brain to know we will die and to ponder if it continues, so when presented with an afterlife, we take the opportunity. However i understand that this desire does not constitute truth. Your thoughts?

And there's Michael Shermer's opinion, which is much like yours: About survival.

That is true on some levels. Here's another thought...what if we are the only animals with enough brain power to see and understand the idea of a realm beyond this one and that the name we give the beings who dwell in this other realm is that of 'god', but that name being more a job title than a true description. This is how the ancient Celts and Norse saw the world...the gods were our own ancestors (distant, but ancestors) who found their way into the Greater Realm and developed powers there that they used for the good of their descendants.

Why can't this be true? Scientists have discovered or at least theorized other dimensions and parallel worlds for some time now. Who is to say that our idea of 'gods' does not stem from this deep seeded 'knowledge' of its existence?

That is a very good point. However I look at more life events that prove God to me just the aspect of after life. I look at a women that have babies, even animals. To me there is no way in the world or universe that something just evolved to where they could grow babies inside. to me that proves God and to look even at how sophisticated our brain is, unlike anything else. that proves God to me and the ocean and the trees and snow. All this stuff didn't just evolve into trees and flowers and the universe didn't just create to 4 seasons and I refuse to believe that I evolved from a monkey I'm sorry but I was created in the image of my Father God and the fact He gives us eternity to live with Him is just the biggest perk

There is belief in God because people were raised to believe that or because a non believing person delved into philosophy (but not enough).
