Why to they always do the following at the holidays?

Can anybody explain why another person of the family would telephone to inquire what one would want for christmas then as ideas are disclosed the reply is for example a sweater or shirt the reply then is i dunt go shopping for clothes for others then another idea is offered up and its the same reply. by the 30 minute conversation is over with the call could have been shortened to 10 seconds with the sentence "you aren't going to get anything for christmas" instead of wasting my time for other important matters. why do they do that. i really dunt need to be re affirmed i am hated by what once use to be my family unit. why?
