My Russian Tortoise is Very Ill, and I don't know what I should do?

My Russian Tortoise is very sick. I just got back from school for winter break and saw him for the first time in a few months. I noticed he is wheezing, has an orangish crust on his bottom jaw, has his mouth wide open and refuses to close it and his tongue is as white as a ghost. I was alarmed when I saw this and immediately looked the symptoms up online. Many sites were suggesting it could be either a respiratory infection or some sort of mouth rot. The latter shocked me.

My main question is, besides the basics (steam, cleaning the tank, etc.) are there any other home remedies I can use to help him out? As I am a college student, I am too broke to take him to the vet as I can't even take myself to the doctors because I can't afford the copay. My parents are refusing to help with the tortoise because they feel it's my responsibility. (Which it definitely is.)

Thanks.

I would take him to a vet, if you do not have the 50$ for a vet visit, how are you affording basic necessities for him in general, like food, and heat, and lighting?

Or see if there is a reptile resque in your area and donate him as it seems you do not have the time or the money to properly care for him.

Russian torts are escape artists and wanderers, so it is not surprising that he's trying to get out through the glass walls - the previous posters have provided good resources - another idea for a small tortoise is a child's sand box - I have a large sand box I bought at Toys R Us that I use to house my tortoise, and though he scratches on the sides sometimes, he can't see through the opaque plastic and so doesn't pace and walk into the walls. And I would like to second the point made about the pet stores knowing very little about RT's - the local PetCo was feeding theirs strawberries and commercial 'Tortoise Food' pellets - two things RT's shouldn't have...

  • Heater would do ,take him and soak him on a mild hot water(as mild as baby bath),, He was freezing soak him for a little or buy a heater for him.
