Do you need a credit/debit card to download apps from the Kindle Fire HD app store?

I just redeemed an Amazon Kindle gift card on Amazon, figuring that whatever apps and books I downloaded on my Kindle Fire HD would just be charged to the balance of my gift card, but when I tried downloading Netflix (a free app) it required a form of credit card payment. Is this necessary, or is there some way to get past it? I really don't want to enter a credit card number if I don't have to.

    I had that problem when I got a gift card and wanted to buy something with it. They still wanted credit card info.

    I did what this guy did and it worked (except I had to set the expiration date to 2013 not 2014)
