Why are my periods so infrequent and irregular?

I'm 16 years old (female, obviously), 5'4", and 127 lbs so I'm not really skinny. I mean I'm not fat either, though. I'm pretty athletic; I swim and run cross country and track. I think that most or quite a bit of me is muscle. I eat a pretty healthy diet even though I eat a lot. But I'm on birth control, which is supposed to regulate your periods, and mine are still really infrequent and irregular. Now, I really enjoy not having them, I'm just curious as to why mine are abnormal. Any ideas?

Have you been losing weight? Usually if you lose a lot of weight then you lose your period because you don't have enough nutrition to make your body function correctly, but other than that i don't know what could be causing it.
