GM 14 Bolt 10.5 inch rear?

Ok here is the problem. I have the back end of my truck jacked up and when you grab where the drive shaft connects too and turn it you can see the rack and pinion turning but the tires do not turn. My guess is i snapped one of the shafts inside the axle and that's why neither wheel is turning. There is no posi or anything in this truck so the tire with least resistance would be the one to turn and if one of the shafts is broke it would be that one that would spin. Anyone have any other ideas on what could be wrong? Thanks guys

Rack and pinion? You mean ring and pinion?

I'd agree, if you are actually looking at the ring and pinion with the diff cover off, and both aren't missing all their teeth, and are indeed turning, either the shaft is broken, or the splines are stripped off the axleshaft. Either way incredibly hard to do, the 10.5" is as near bulletproof as you will find in "light duty" (up to 1 ton) trucks.

What happens if you spin the tires? Those are difficult rears to break. Only cheap thing to break would be the spider gears. Those are the small gears that the axles connect to. There is a 3rd one that connects the two gears. If you managed to break one of those you would get the effect you describe. Same thing if you somehow broke one of the axles. I would say next step would be get the cover off and see whats going on in there. Did you keep driving when this happened (assuming a 4x4)? IF a spider broke and you kept driving the pieces may have chewed up other things and its going to be an expensive fix. IF you did not drive it you may get away with just a new set of spiders. IF its just an axle its even easier except getting the chunk out.

You will get the same result from a broken axle gear or pinion gear. Pinion gear is the weak link although it certainly is not weak on this rear end. Rack and pinion refers to the steering though and this truck did not have rack and pinion steering. It has a reciprocating ball and worm gear box.
