What does it mean if a dog voraciously licks my hand?

I went to my cousin's house this evening for Christmas. They have a couple little dog over there who like me, but don't, shall we say, adore me. So when I got there, there wasn't much to do so I just started playing with them, petting them, and giving them a whole lot of attention. Then, out of nowhere, they both just started licking my hand as if their lives depended on it. I don't think there was anything on my hand, at least nothing out of the ordinary. They had never done anything like that. They kept this up for at least two minutes straight. Just curious as to why they did it.

You need to learn the difference between vigorous and voracious.

It could be any number of things. It could be something as simple as putting on lotion that the dogs smelled. I know that every time I put on lotion my dog does the same thing. It could also be that if you had a snack previously and hadn't washed your hands, they could've smelled it. Dogs have amazing senses and can spot things that a human may not be able to.

This is very normal, it can be anything from you had eaten something that smelled nice earlier to you had sweat on your hands. Most animals will lick at anything salty and sweat is salty meaning dogs will lick away at it.

I've had that happen to me before. I went to my friend's house and their dog started licking my hand. My friend says when dogs lick like that, it means they're kissing you!

It can be many things but, when dogs do this it can be a sign that they really like you or feel very affectionate towards you.

    Happy holidays. :)
