Why do guitar necks get gradually wider from the head to the body?

In other words, I'm asking why the neck is wider at the lower fret area.My old guitar instructor builds guitars, and even he didn't know the answer to this.Does anyone of you know?

It gives more room between the strings where you pick them, allowing greater picking accuracy without making the neck too wide where you fret it.
