What is the difference between the Roman Catholic Church and the Eastern Orthodox Church?
I am Roman Catholic.
These two Christian denominations are the Top 1 and Top 2 largest Christian denominations with the Roman Catholic Church as #1 and the Eastern Orthodox Church as #2 with the other denominations like Protestantism #3 and the rest fall behind them.
I hear people calling the Eastern Orthodox Church the "Eastern Catholic Church" and
I hear people calling the Roman Catholic Church the "Western Catholic Church".
What are their differences and what are their similarities?
@ Michael
You confused person. I'm jut about ready to unfold to your brainwashed mind the terrors that Protestantism has done not just 100+ years ago but also what evil they are doing as we speak but I don't think your on way mind can handle such information. The Catholic Church does not target the homosexuals themselves but it does not promote homosexuality. When the Apostles were alive they did not allow female priests therefore we are just following tradition. Those 7 churches were formed through : sexual lust, dis obedience, pride and greed. Do your research before you try to oppose the one true Church: That Holy Roman Catholic Church.

The Major differences are:
The Eastern Orthodox have 12 Patriarchs and Catholics have the Pope (there were 153 Popes before the schism on 1054)
The Creed where Catholics say the Holy Spirit proceeds from the Father and the Son, the Orthodox believe he proceeds from the Father only.
The Orthodox do not believe Mary was without Original sin.
Other than that we are pretty much the same.
"The ear that listens to salutary reproof is at home among the wise. Those who disregard discipline hate themselves, but those who heed reproof acquire understanding.The fear of the LORD is training for wisdom, and humility goes before honors"
~~~Proverbs 15:31-33
Peace be with your spirit
I think you are missing a few VERY important things.
First, your assumption that the church is Roman is wrong. The church is simply Catholic. Meaning Univeral.
Second, not all Orthodox are Eastern Rite. There are Western Rite Orthodox as well.
Third, when people refer to the Eastern Catholic Church, they mean those of the Eastern Rites who stayed with the Holy See.
You see, the church has "two lungs." Eastern and Western.
Both the Orthodox and Eastern Catholics use the Divine Liturgy rather than the Mass. There are Greek Churches and there are Greek Orthodox. Russian and Russian Orthodox. Byzantine and Orthodox Byzantine
Pick up your copy of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. The chapter on prayer was written by a Byzantine rite priest while in prison for his faith.
Just my opinion, but Roman Rite Catholics should attend Divine Liturgy at least once in their lives.
So many motives. The Catholic church is considered by way of the Orthodox to be too legalistic and depends too much on mental hypothesis. The Orthodox church is regarded by means of the Catholics to be too mystical and depends an excessive amount of on religious practices. Catholic monks may not be married whereas japanese Orthodox priests could marry prior to ordination. The eastern Orthodox Church does not consider in purgatory and does now not observe the Stations of the cross. And lots of other explanations.
Although the Eastern orthodox church shares roots with the Roman Catholic church, they have many contrasting beliefs.
One major issue that divided the two churches is that controversy of icon use in their rituals and worship. The western church deemed the images appropriate while the Eastern church, influenced by the Iconoclasm movement of Leo III, believed such icons were against the teachings of the Old Testament.
Another major dividing issue between the two churches was the possession of power.Traditionally, the Pope was the top leader of the church and all matters of divinity were his concerns, but this changed when Eastern Europe adopted Caesaropapism. With this practice there was no separation of church and government.
I"m not going to go into all the details, but research the filioque in the Nicene Creed, that's the biggest difference. Also, the Orthodox Church doesn't acknowledge the authority of the Pope as leader of the Church. They also tend to have a more mystical bent, and are not as dogmatic and intellectual as the Catholic Church. A lot of the other differences are more subtle. You can google Catholic and Orthodox differences on wikipedia, that's a good source.
They were the same church until late in the Roman Empire. There was a split, and the Eastern church moved to Constantinople. In fact Constantinople was where the head of the church was based. The Western church split off from the Eastern church some time later.
