Dogs overdose on Rimadyl?

My 6 yr old cocker spaniel 40lbs. ate about 700mgs. (7tablets) of Rimadyl. I induced vomiting within 1 - 1-1/2 hrs. There are no vets available til morning....12 hours from now. What are his prospects ? Is there anything else I can do for him til morning? Thanks.

Emergency Vets are open 24/7, 365 days a year, including Holidays. If your dog ingested that much Rimadyl, he is going to have major problems in the future with his Liver or his Kidneys. You need to look in your Yellow Pages under Veterinarians, find one that is open 24 hours (they are in there) and get your dog to the vet NOW. I had a perfectly healthy and happy 2 1/2 year old Chihuahua named Gigi, who had broken her leg and was given Rimadyl. Gigi only took 5 doses of Rimadyl, it caused Liver Damage and Gigi died of Liver Failure. I had to put her down, so she would not suffer in pain, which was the hardest and most heartbreaking thing I've ever done. Rimadyl is a very dangerous drug that has killed many dogs and cats. Please, for your dogs sake, do not wait to get him to a vet. The makers of Rimadyl have lawsuits against them.

IF you got him there quickly he should be fine. My sisters dog got into the rimadyl and it was not immediately discovered. Sadly the dog died from a perforated stomach from the overdose even though she was treated by a vet. Time is of the essence in a case like this.

The normal dosage of Rimadyl is 2 mg for every pound that the dog weighs, according to Rimadyl's manufacturer, Pfizer. "The Pill Book Guide to Medication For Your Dog and Cat" notes that dogs have been tested taking 20 mg per pound for 14 days and rarely suffered from overdose symptoms.

Symptoms of dogs suffering a Rimadyl overdose include black feces that resemble tar, nausea (where a dog often licks its lips and cringes), vomiting, loss of appetite, increase in thirst, urinating more frequently, swelling of the abdomen and tenderness of the abdomen, according to veterinarian Dr. Anne Marie Manning. The dog will not want the abdomen or belly area touched and may not be able to lie down because of the pain.

    Hugs,

Unfortunately, only the vet can answer that question, as he or she will be the only one who diagnose how your dog is faring after it's treatment. However, I do hope that you learned your lesson from this and will no longer leave the Rimadyl out and accessible to your dog; after all, they're pretty much like a treat to dogs (as my mom's dog - who is also on Rimadyl - can attest to)!

As the premier animal-oriented poison control center in North America, the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center is the best resource for any animal poison-related emergency, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Make the call that can make all the difference: (888) 426-4435.

They can help you and give you any advice on whatever you need to do. I would give your dog a teaspoon of Hydrogen Peroxide to make him vomit up whatever he hasn't already digested. It wont harm your dog.

Your dog should be fine unless he is vomiting black blood/ tar looking blood, limping, is embarrased/ scared/ nervous which included, tiredness, licking lips quivering, I would recommend lots feed him bread so he takes time to digest so he doesn't digest the pills and lots of liquids makes he throws as many pills out as possible, treat him a you would do if it were a poison, or alcohol to a small child, and don't let him sleep.

    http://veterinarymedicine.dvm360.com/vetmed/Articl... Fairly science-y.

This states that the dosage that your dog got is right at the borderline where they suggest that supportive measures be taken to prevent kidney damage.

Very burnt toast can be substituted for charcoal in a pinch (not as good, but better than nothing). If you truly cannot have him seen for twelve hours, I would burn a couple of slices of bread, crunch it up and mix it with something palatable enough that the dog would eat it (cottage cheese, canned dog food or meat, whatever). Hopefully, you managed to have him vomit up a portion of what he consumed.

Nothing I can think of -- inducing the vomiting was a good idea, though I wish it had happened earlier. My guess is that a lot of it had been absorbed within 90 minutes.

Encouraging him to drink a lot of water MIGHT help, and certainly won't hurt.

Get him in to the vet first thing, though.
