Christians: Why did the Jews not stone Jesus' mother, Mary for the sin of fornication?

Update:

james o : yes,she was accused by them. Apparently, none of the the gospel writers knew about these event. In fact, Mark and John did not know about her virgin conception and believe that Jesus was the legitimate son of Joseph.

Update 2:

She must had produced some proof that they could not punish her.

Because the Bible says that the first miracle Jesus performed was to turn water into wine. However, the Qur'an says that the first miracle of Jesus is when he defended his mother in the face of a disbelieving audience as he lies in his cradle.

contrary to Christian imagination, Jews rarely if ever actually stoned anyone. Their system required so much proof before any such thing could be done that it is unlikely it ever actually happened.

none of these stories were ever discussed until long after Jesus was dead. And any writings of mary were destroyed by the christians who put together the New Testament.

So no one has any idea about Mary's actual sex life, or whether she gave virgin birth etc or not. The followers of Jesus came up with it long after anyone with any personal knowledge could dispute it.

It's a good story for those who think there is something dirty about having had sex. In their imaginations it makes Mary somehow "more pure" and therefore makes the baby somehow more pure. But there is nothing impure about Mary having children fathered by Joseph.

Actually its very simple, unless there are two witnesses to the act then a person cannot be sentenced to death under Jewish law. not only that, but the witnesses had to have warned the participants before the act an then BOTH of them, not just the woman, get convicted. So, regardless of whom she committed adultery with, at most she could be divorced without Joseph having to pay the divorce settlement, very simple if one atually knows how Jewish law operated at the time and requiring no divine intervention The concept of having to prove someone guilty rather than them having to prove innocence has been part of Judaism for the last 3500 years, not our fault that other peopel took so long to catch up!

So Mary could have gotten pregnant from anyone, Joseph just divorced her as required by Jewish law in such a circumstance sinc ehe had no witnesses and thus no harsher penalty could be applied

  • Because the only person who could have accused her unless she was caught in the act (Joseph) chose not to do so. Perhaps it's because the story was true, or perhaps it's because Jesus was actually Joseph's son.

If Jesus was Joseph's son, it wouldn't have been an issue, because Joseph and Mary were technically married, but Mary had not moved into Joseph's house. It was normal in ancient Israel for two people to be married by law for a year or more before the wife moved into her husband's house, and it also wasn't unusual for children to be conceived during that period of time.

Mary was a virgin and had never had sexual intercourse with a man when she became pregnant by means of God's Holy Spirit.

Joseph was engaged to Mary at the time she conceived. In a dream, God’s angel explained to Joseph the wonderful reason why his virgin fiancée was pregnant. The angel said: “Do not be afraid to take Mary your wife home, for that which has been begotten in her is by holy spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you must call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” (Matthew 1:20, 21)

The angel then explained that God would perform this miracle by means of His holy spirit, adding: “With God no declaration will be an impossibility.” (Luke 1:31, 34-37) Surely the One who created the amazing process of human reproduction could also cause the conception and birth of Jesus from a chaste virgin. If God created the universe and its finely tuned laws, he could also use an egg cell from Mary’s ovary to produce a perfect human Son.

    1) Mary was betrothed (engaged) to Joseph and with him

at all times. Joseph did not expose her to public suspicion,

and received advice from an angel about Jesus' conception,

with reference to prophecy. (Matthew 1:18-25)

    2) Joseph and Mary, were both descendants of King David and,

like all good Jewish people of God, they knew about the many

prophecies in scripture saying their Messiah would be born to

a virgin of King David's family line. It was known as "the desire

of women" to be the one to fulfill that role. Other devout Jews

such as Simeon (Luke 2:25-35) and Anna (Luke 2:36-38) were

awaiting the birth of Jesus. Many Jews knew the prophecies.

    Prophetic references:~ 2 Samuel 7:12-17 .. Psalm 2:7

    Isaiah 7:13-14 .. 9:6-7 .. 40:3 .. 52:6,10 .. Isaiah 53

    3) God protected Mary and Jesus by various warnings from angels.

    Matthew 1:24 .. 2:12-15 .. 2:19-23

It is a good question and which has a complicated answer. Unfortunately, no one knows for sure, but the strongest theory is that she was already betrothed to Joseph, so their peer group just rolled their eyes and let it pass; another is that it happened while many people (not just the Jews) were in the process of moving to be counted in a census that king Herod had ordered. The census takers were centrally located and required men of fighting age to report in to be counted, instead of going from town to town. This brought about much chaos, and the trivial matter of one pregnant woman travelling with a man was not the concern of other travellers.

Because she was the niece of the high priest's wife and she went immediately to their house when she found that she was pregnant.

Luke 1:35 And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.

Luke 1:36 And, behold, thy cousin Elisabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her old age: and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren.

    Luke 1:39 And Mary arose in those days, and went into the hill country with haste, into a city of Juda;

Luke 1:40 And entered into the house of Zacharias, and saluted Elisabeth.

Two reasons. First, because Joseph did not go through with his plan to divorce her publicly; that's actually addressed specifically in the text. Second, the Jews (who inhabited a Roman province) were not allowed to carry out the death penalty.

I suppose they assumed Jesus was Joseph's son. After all, he was supposedly visited by an angel who told him that the child was God's, so he didn't denounce her himself.
