What's up with Wi-Fi?
I apologize, this question is going to sound really stupid. How does Wi-Fi work? Do you have to already have an internet connection, and then if you go to a place with Wi-Fi, you can get it there too? I mean, surely if you don't have internet you can't just go to a place with Wi-Fi and then get internet there...right?

For wifi at home you do need an active internet connection, either DSL, cable etc. Then you need a wifi router that "transmits" a signal around the house you can connect into. Wifi is a short ranged wireless system that just replaces the need for Ethernet cables.
There are indeed some places that supply wifi that you may use if you are visiting. McDonalds, Starbucks, many bookstores, city libraries, hotels, and even schools SOMETIMES supply wifi that customers can use while at those locations. Some places charge to connect. If you don't have internet at home you can still use wifi at places that supply the connection. You just won't have it at home. In some places you may find they charge to use the wifi systems. Just be aware "public" wifi is not private and comes with security risks. Your own wifi, as long as it is encrypted with a good password, is safe without the risks.
