Allergic reaction to bandaids?

I had minor surgery at the beggining of the month. After the initial bandages came off, the doctor showed me how he wanted me to dress it for the next two weeks. After the first week putting bandaids on was almost intolerable because I had developed a horrible rash that was to the point of bleeding. I switched to medical tape and cotton balls. I'm now to the point where I don't have to dress it anymore, but I still have the aweful rash where the bandaids were. It's so itchy to the point where I couldn't sleep last night. If I scratch it though, it continues to itch even worse. Should I see a doc, or is there any kind of cream I can use to make the rash go away?

Yes. You may have to keep using the medical tape. My Mom gets the same thing. Something in the adhesive irritates her skin. You can try taking something like benadryl, but that'll only mask it, it won't stop the rash from forming. But for one that's already started, it can be a big help. I'm not sure of the types off-hand, but you can find some types of band-aids that have a weaker adhesive, so it usually doesn't cause such a bad reaction. Like I said, my Mom gets this and has to be careful. She can never leave them on for periods of time. She has to take them off and leave it off for a while before putting another one back on.

You can also try a cortisone cream to get rid of it. I mean, the only rash cream I know of are for eczema, but something like that may help. Eczema is basically your immune system going haywire and sometimes it can be caused by different exposures, causing it to over react. Also to help w/the itching, try running cold water over the rash. It helps my eczema a whole lot. When it's really bad, the colder, the better. And when you dry off the area, don't wipe, dab more than anything. If you wipe to hard, it'll get irritated again.

some people are allergic to the adhesive substance used in bandaids and other tapes/wraps. this is usually the result of a latex allergy...which affects lots of people it causes anything from skin irritation to sometimes the skin coming right off with the bandage. can also include itching, rash, dry skin, etc.

Take some benadryl and see if that helps (only do this if you have someone else with the kids cause it can make you loopy!) Also, call your doctor (allergist if you have one) and let them know what is going on. At the very least, they'll mark it in your chart, at the worse they'll want you to be seen.

Yes look for benadryl itch cream and pills. they will help with the allergic reaction, the pills will help you sleep as well.
