Should I bring proof of rent?
This will be my first time doing taxes next year where I am currently renting instead of living in the dorms. I usually go to a place for help on my taxes and I know I need to bring my W-2, last year's tax returns, etc. Right now I'm not on a lease, so would I need proof that I am currently renting where I'm staying at?
I don't pay anyone to do my taxes or to help me with them. I go to this community college for help and they do it for free. I've done TurboTax before but it was frustrating. I just want to make sure I'm doing everything correctly, even if that means waiting in line for a good hour.

actually they're just looking for your current address, while sure you can bring your lease they probably could go with just your drivers license. I use H&R Block and although they charge a little, it's worth it because I know their information is up-to-date. You can use their fee payment on the following year's income tax report. So many laws change from year to year, their books grow larger and larger so is better to ask the one who is doing your taxes what else you can claim. Even if you have to come back later or drop off more forms. Always make sure you have a copy of everything you give them.

Is there any way you could do your taxes on your own?
I did them myself my whole life.
And... no one ever taught me !!!
Give it a try? At least a try?
IRS.gov. E-file my return for free.
They have programs that you just input your info and hit send.
No proof of rent needed.
Opinion: Seems unrealisticly silly to pay anyone to do your taxes for you.
And.. .you are a college student. You are not anyone DUMB that can't read a sheet of paper.

The rent that you pay has no affect on your tax returns. Leave that information at home.

No you are not required to bring a lease which as you know rent is not deductable expense. Happy New Year.

rent has nothing to do with your income tax return except in the states that still have some kind of renters credit, or allowance--not many that I am aware of due to budgetary constraints
