It's been so long since I've played text RPGs that I can't remember the names of most of the ones I liked. There are some lists and review sites that ought to provide a good starting point. However - if you want a (more or less) realistic modern-day setting for a change from high fantasy, I highly recommend Modus Operandi. It's subscription based, not free; sorry. Last time I checked it was $15 a month, but if you really like it, it's well worth the price. The setting is a large Carribean island. There are many different sections of the island to go to depending on whether you feel like combat, or taking a university class, or solving crimes, or hanging out in a local restaurant, etc. RP is strictly enforced in this game; there's a small section called the Reality Cafe where you can go if you need to talk to somebody OOC. There are lots of skills (combat, art, music, fishing, etc.) and there are over 1,000 professions you can choose based on the skills you've mastered. If that doesn't strike your fancy, I'd start with The MUD Connector. It's a site for people looking for a MUD (text-based MMORPG). You can search by name or category, read reviews. You can do a detailed search where you pick the features you want in a MMORPG, like multi-classing, newbie-friendly, has quests, has clans, has crafting, and so on.
