Adobe Photoshop Elements won't let me add text?

I can edit all the text settings like color and font, but it won't let me actually type the text.

Update:

Nope, I'm writing with blue on black.

Your foreground color swatch (at the bottom of the toolbar) might be black but is the little swatch up in the options bar also black? It should be but sometimes it doesn't change automatically. I always forget to check it:-)

Reset the Text Tool by clicking on it then click on the little arrow on the far left side of the Options Bar and click "Reset Tool".

Make sure the font size isn't bigger than the file you're trying to type the text on. (Yes, I've done this. Duh!)

I would almost think that you are trying to type on a white surface with white colored type. This sounds silly but believe me we have all done it.

I've been using Photoshop for over 10 years and I've never had this problem. Look at the color your computer is trying to type with.

Elements is good for novice user. Adjusting photos for home casual use. If you're a professional, PS CS2 would be your tool - for professional printing, color correction, effects, etc etc etc.
