How long have you been a Vegetarian/Vegan?

I was looking at the answers to another question - I think it was 'Why are you a Vegetarian' - and someones' answer puzzled me:

'It's a fad.'

So when does something stop being a 'fad' and start being a 'way of life'? I'm coming up to my 17th anniversary of being a vegetarian. My best friend has been one since school (36 years ago - gulp, where did the years go????) I'd be interested in knowing how long people have been Vegetarian/Vegan.

I'm a Vegetarian & have been since 1965. I gave up meat due to the fact that it was reacting badly in my gut, and causing me to bloat up with too much gas.

I have never missed meat in anyway at all. According to my Doctor, I'm very healthy for my age, (I'm now 63)

I've been a Vegetarian for a year this Tuesday coming up (New Year's Day 2013).

I really don't think it's a fad, personally I've forgotten what meat and fish tastes like completely, how could I miss the taste of meat and fish when I don't know what they both taste like. Also, eating meat to me would be basically murder, the atrocious suffering of animals is what keeps me Vegetarian.

I think when someone says "Vegetarianism is just a fad", they're probably basing it on the 'Faketarians', i.e the ones who claim to be Vegetarian but still eat meat and fish when no one is looking.

Yes, it is annoying when people dismiss your way of life as a fad. But think of it like this: because vegetarianism is "trendy" now, it means that there are now boca burgers in mainstream supermarkets and even some vegan fast food choices.

For me, it is more annoying when long-term vegetarians act like they are better than newbie vegetarians -- as though there is a hierarchy and the newbies are all just posers.

I've been a vegetarian for 15 years. I stopped eating meat when I was 12. Had to fight my parents to do it too!

I have been vegetarian seeing that I was in 10th grade, four years in the past.( For 1 yr of that, I used to be vegan). It does appear like it is a scene thing to do but you then simply have got to consider... The animals are being saved whatever the reason folks don't seem to be consuming them, which is a good thing. It's silly what individuals will do to be "scene" but oh well. As a minimum they're doing things that are optimistic.

Close to 8 years on the fad.

    Some other "fads"

    Rock and Roll

    The Beatles

    The internet

    Email

    Pac Mac

Granted I may be abnormal. If I went to my parents I could probably find some 8Track tapes and my pet rock.

36 years here too. Yes, it's just a fad. :P I'll probably go back to eating animals in about another 70 years from now, when the fad has finally worn off.

Since 11 or 12 can't remember the exact date. Fad was probably said by someone who read that pizza is classified as a vegetable. Or someone who thinks Twitter is as reliable as Al Jazeera for news.

    Hi Lynn.
