*Beginner* Question about understanding lens sizes?

Hello, I'm new to the photography/videography game so I thought id ask for alittle help here. My issue is that a couple of weeks ago I purchased a 40mm lens for my Canon T4i and I've loved it so far.. Only problem? No zoom. Im in the process of picking up a second lense now that should be able to zoom, AF (though I dont use it, but good for my employees until they learn MF), and of course MF, but honestly im a little confused on the technical side of it.. I now understand exactly how large a 40mm is, so if I purchase either the 28-105mm or the 18-55mm lens if I understand correctly these should be able to zoom in up to 28 or 18 and zoom out for a wide angle of 55 or 105, correct? Also, these lenses should be able to hit right on the 40mm mark as well, right? If thats not correct would you mind clarifying for me? And also, which one would you recommend? I'll be mainly shooting music video and promotional pictures. Close ups would be great though! I just want the biggest bang for my buck right now so I get get out of the store and into the studio again.

Thanks!

Update:

Thank you BriaR. Honestly the AF on my 40mm is a bit slow anyways so we may just have to train everyone to go pro with MF lol.

Update 2:

@fhotoace - No, I dont have any unrealistic expectations. I openly admitted im a beginner in my 1st sentence and title.. I was hoping some of the gurus here could offer me some advice on a lens I may be missing out there.. My familys filled with ex and current professional photographers so yes, I know the skill required to make brilliant art and im more than willing to do whatever it takes to put my company on the next level; though id rather not ask for assistance from them and maintain my independence.

To answer your question, yes we have multiple scripts prepared as well as storyboard sketches and we've scouted locations for a majority of the scripts and gained permission for the use of private property as well as pyrotechnics. Just trying to understand lenses abit.. Thank you for your answer.

    Yes, you are correct.

The lower the focal length (mm number) the wider angle the photo will be, and the higher the number, the more close up distant objects will be.

Normally though, zooming to the longer mm is called "zooming in" as the distant objects look closer, and zooming to the shorter focal length is called "zooming out" as you are making distant objects look further away.

So while your terminology is reversed, you have the concept correct.

DSLR stands for digital SLR. that's the comparable as an previous SLR digicam, even though it makes use of a sensor as a substitute of action picture. you're saying you like a 35mm or one hundred twenty digicam, so a DSLR won't do you any good. As for a action picture SLR, carry on with the oftentimes happening companies, alongside with Nikon, Minolta, Canon, and Pentax. The Nikon N6006 you suggested is a huge digicam average. different Nikon's could be, nicely, something. i might additionally advise the N8008s, FM2, N2020, and the N90.The rebellion G is besides. The Canon T70 is a huge compact digicam, and is extensive to apply. The Canon T2 isn't so good, because of the fact that is build high quality is a substantial concern; replaced into not made with high quality as an characteristic. As for lenses, get a severe high quality 50mm f1.8. those are low priced, good, and could fit your needs because of the fact that's the comparable as what our eye sees. of direction for various artwork, you will possibly be able to choose a telephoto, macro, or huge perspective lens. A UV filter out isn't mandatory, yet once you get one, eliminate it before you're taking the image. in case you're frightened approximately preserving your lens, in basic terms use the lens cap. because of the fact of this they have been invented. in case you like some thing else, purchase a lens hood. They artwork in basic terms besides, and additionally save flare united statesto a minimum.

Your 40mm lens is a STM lens. Your T4i will only autofocus during video with STM lenses. Currently the only STM zoom is the 18-135 STM.

With the 28-105 or 18-55 you are stuck with manual focus during video.
