Is it okay to feed Kashi cereal to my dog?

So my dog always looks at me in the morning. He cries and wags his little tail when I eat kashi. I decided to give him some one day. He seemed to love it. I only give him a little bit, but now I even mix it in with his dog food since he loved it so much. He seems to be healthy. He's not overweight and it doesn't seem to cause him any health problems.

Is this okay?

Kashi is yet ANOTHER 100% grain food. This isn't good for your dog. Grain digests as SUGAR, not to mention whatever extra is in it. Your dog isn't a chicken, he is a CARNIVORE.

Feeding your dog -when he whines is TRAINING him to whine for food (at the table or while you are eating) and you are also okaying being MANIPULATED by the dog. Don't write in later when you have behavior problems.

You are going to get a lot of opinions. That is all they are. My daughter was a BIG eater and she was a very cute chubby baby, but is very slim now. She also had colic. My mom kept saying give her cereal, giver her cereal. That child is hungry. I was trying to follow doctors orders. I gave in, because I couldn't stand to hear her scream one more minute. It was really bad. It was the BEST thing I ever did. She was so content. She ate bit less because she was full, so her colic also got so much better. Use rice cereal only. That has a calming affect. It is also less likely to cause constipation in your baby. My daughter had always problems with constipation, before the cereal. If you put it in the bottle, like I did. Make sure you start off with a small amount and if you don't already, warm the bottle. This helps the baby's tummy period. People actually give their newborns COLD formula!! My kids seemed to like it a bit thick, but that was when they were older. I started my oldest daughter at about 4 weeks. It did help her sleep and that is what ultimately made me try it. Before the cereal she only slept about 4 hours for the ENTIRE day.! My nephew was born @ 3 months early. He had a feeding problem and while in the hospital (he was about 8 pounds at this point) the doctor's started putting rice cereal in his milk. He was in the hospital 4 months at this point. After that he was home in a week and a half. It does help. If you have any questions on it, email me. Good luck.

Kashi is absolutely not good for your dog. You should never give your dog grains of any kind. Grains make dogs sick. As a rule, never give your dog any foods unless you know its ingredients. Certain foods are extremely toxic to dogs, i.e., chocolate, raisins, etc. You can literally kill a dog by feeding them the wrong foods.

Go online and do a search on "bad foods for dogs." You can easily learn the worst foods for them. Also, don't assume that a food, just by its name, is OK to feed your dog. For example, beef stew. The dish has beef, obviously that's OK for your dog, right? Not necessarily. Ask what's in the beef stew. Some people put raisins in their stew--raisins can kill dogs.

Dogs are meat eaters. Diets should be balanced with meat, fresh fruits and vegetables. (In the wild, our dogs' cousins would kill prey and get their fruits and vegetables from the meat of the prey--the reason they go for the gizzards, first.) Never feed commercial pet foods sold in grocery stores. To learn why, go to the Animal Protection Institute and read their investigative report on what is really put into your pets' foods. Don't buy your pet foods in box stores either--they're equally bad. Even the so-called top of the line foods so popular today--are really bad. Note that veterinarians actually sell this junk food in their practices, too. What does that tell you? Our vets know that these foods make our dogs sick--good for vets--they get to charge fees to treat the illnesses. That's why I never patronize a vet that sells garbage foods in his lobby.

Finally, just because your dog "likes" to eat something is not a good reason to give them a food to eat. Your job, your responsibility as a loving dog owner, is to look out for your dog's real needs. He's like a little kid, he's going to eat what he thinks smells good and tastes good--but, that doesn't mean a food is good for him. You have to make sure that the food is good for him.

Read the ingredients. Some Kashi has honey, chocolate, or low calorie sweeteners, all of which are not good for your dog.
