Old 1080i vs new 720p?
Would a new 720 plasma have a better picture quality than an old 1080i? Or even better would a new 1080 lcd be better?

Between 1080i and 720p, flip a coin.
If you want something better, you need at least 1080p,
but, in practical terms, unless you're sensitive to 'artifacts',
1080p won't really be much of a visible improvement over 1080i.
To take a good leap upward, start looking at the tech
that hasn't yet hit the market: 2k and 4k.
(It's coming, but it will take a while.)
