Why is Islam often referred to as 'a religion of peace'?

All religions state they are a religion of peace- or have I missed something?

Any misinformed, well-intentioned person who wants to say Buddhists is unaware of the vicious pogroms underway in Burma, Thailand and Sri Lanka by Buddhis governments, who persecute the Karin Christians of northern Burma, Thailand's attacks on Muslims and Sri Lanka oppressing the Tamil minority, who are mostly Hindu.

Because people are stupid or afraid to be perceived as bigoted. Anyone who looks at Islam and sees a religion of peace is insane.

Same goes for all monotheistic religions, but followers of Islam still take their religion waaaaaay too seriously.

Its only claimed to be a religion of peace by Muslims, for propaganda purposes. But everybody else knows Islam is far from a religion of peace.

Because Muslims tell us that their religion is the religion of peace

It is a religion of peace because it promotes peace with the Creator and peace with nature that we live in.

The word Islam also mean salam or peace.Muslims greeted and wishes each other salam or peace (instead of HELLo).

I have never heard anyone refer to Islam like that.

The root word of Islam is Salam which means peace (Arabic).

When the last religious sectarian has killed off the last of their enemies things will be as peaceful as it gets!
