My dog is losing hair, bald spots and looks really dry.?

I have a 9 year old Labrador. BIG dog that weighs 150LBS. While i've been giving him a bath, i noticed that he has this huge bald spot under his arm pit. To the point where it's not normal. It's bald, very dry, and makes him smell a little bad. He also scratches it a lot. I've been putting some medication on him ( wound treatment cream) but it hasn't really done anything. What is going on with my dog, and what should i do? I'm taking him to the vet but i want to know what others think it is.

Useful information?

its been going on for around 5 months,

he has it a little around his eye as well.

It's in Colorado with cold, snowy weather,

I might suggest taking your canine to peer one more vet. It can be at the same workplace if there is not another one almost you, simply name forward and request a further vet. That method that you would be able to get a second opinion. It in general is not mange but you will have to still discover a vet who can aid you determine what it in reality is. Routinely medical professionals write matters off and go, 'meh, it commonly will not be an drawback.' and it could not be but your canine is a bit of younger to be shedding any fur. Additionally are trying looking up original matters like that for the breed. For illustration type: "Balding Labrador puppy" in a search box like Google or look for a pet care certain site. Best of luck

    He could be hypothyroid.

    He could have food allergies.

    He could have dermatitis.

There could be other underlying medical conditions.

It may be due to his obesity.

You could be bathing him too often, which damages his skin. Bathing inhibits his ability to produce the oils he needs to weatherproof his fur and protect his skin.
