    Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, and Wisconsin which had been part of the Province of Quebec until 1783. Basically it was everything south of the Great Lakes, north of the Ohio River, and east of Louisiana. There is a map of the former extent of Quebec here:

    District 12, where the book begins, is located in the coal-rich region that was formerly known as Appalachia.
