In North Carolina, must I give the police my name when I am getting an encounter?

For example - I am walking down the road, a police happens to simply stop and question me what my name is. I ask if I am being detained or am I under arrest - I am being detained.

It appears that I am being checked because I have been suspected for committing a crime. Or not - perhaps it late, small town etc.

Please don't give me a sch-peal about what I should and shouldn't do. I simply want to know if I am required in NC to give me name weather or not I am suspected of committing a crime.

Thanks.

I don't think you have to but I would since I am not a criminal and respect what the police do. Most criminals don't give their names as they are low life's and hate the police.

Ok. I don't think you have to give your name unless the officer tells you that you are being detained as you stated. In this case if you refuse you can be arrested for resisting or delaying. It's a fine line and not very clear. If your not being detained you can simply walk away and give them nothing. If you are being detained I would ask what for. I wouldn't give my I'd only my name unless they order you.
