what is wrong with my rabbit? please help?
Hi guys! I'm 16 and I have a female albino rabbit called Ruby. I'm not sure exactly how old she is, but I'd say about 8 months. I change her cage every 2 days and almost everytime I feed her I give her atleast one kind of veg/fruit or a few bunny choccies along side her normal food. I changed her cage today and noticed there was blood in her pee??? I don't know if it was blood or just the colour of her urine, but it was red? I just want to make sure its normal before I take her to the vet.... I was gonna wait a few days and see if it continues, and if it does I was gonna take her to the vet to see what's going on. But if its normal I know not to worry. I know this may sound stupid, but can female rabbits have periods? Like go into heat? Thanks so much!
What if I can't get an appointment until after new year????

If you have fed her hay with hibiscus in it, that can sometimes dye the urine red. If you can, check and see how the urine dries, as dried blood turns brown. If she's not inside already, bring her in and keep an eye on her. If it does seem to be blood and you can't get an appointment with the vet right away, just get her in as soon as you can.

First of all, is she spayed? In case you don't know what 'spay' means, google it. Basially it means your rabbit can not have babies, not want to have sex and no period. Yes, rabbits have period. It's very light and you can only notice it in their pee. However if she is acting weird, phone your vet immediately. I recommend changing her cage/litter/tray EVERY SINGLE DAY. As if rabbits are in dirty or poo-filled places where bugs will go to, she might get mites/fleas/ringworms. Mites can easily be cured at vets, my newest rabbit got mites and the vet told me it's a GIRL. I thought it's a boy. Anyway, ringworms are VERY DANGEROUS! It can spread to humans and let me tell you, it's HORRIBLE! You can die from ringworms. However mites die when they get under human skin. Rabbits will usually lick their private area after they pee or poo and females will lick their private area when they have their period. It's normal I assure you. However, if she's spayed, this is VERY DANGEROUS! Don't wait a few days, bring her to the vet IMMEDIATELY! Also, is she eating and drinking normally? Does she act normal? Gently press the back of her ears against the back of your hand. If it's cold or colder than 108-109/38-39 degrees or warmer, try wrapping her in a towel (if cold) and fan her/put a mini-fan infront of her(if warm). If the temperature doesn't change, she isn't eating or drinking normally or acting weirdly, VET IMMEDIATELY! Rabbits are very very VERY fragile. They can die easily. If you can't get an appointment until after new year, bring her to any vet that has legal licenses and trusted/recommended qualities. If there's something wrong with her, (if it's not period) I'm afraid she won't make till after new year. However, if she's not spayed, you just wasted your time reading this. My 7 month-old female had her first period and I got her spayed last week. Spayed/neuter(for males) are much happier, less aggresive, friendlier and easily trained. They also stop biting and destroying furniture, etc. If she's not spayed, I recommend spaying her as female rabbits can get uterine(and a few others which I don't remember) cancer. 80% of un-spayed females die of uterine, etc cancer. I hope it's just period and Ruby is safe and healthly.
Source(s): Have owned rabbits for 5 years. I have 7 rabbits. A little accident with my first male and female. They had 4 babies and I adopted another 5 months ago. Any problems/questions about rabbits, just PM me or something. I'm quite an expert. I wanna be a veterinarian when I'm old enough. I LOVE animals. - Anonymous8 years ago
Sometimes certain plants will give rabbits blood in their pee. My rabbit ate pansies and her pee had a little blood.
It could also be uterine cancer. If your rabbit is getting skinny and losing a lot of fur, those are signs. My rabbit just died from it and we ignored the signs until it was too late. With uterine cancer when you see a ton of blood it is usually too late- my rabbit was bleeding for about 3 days then she passed away.
Praying that its just the diet!
