What is modules operator in programing?

in php : 5 % 3 equals 2? why is that,, the remainder of that is 66666...7

5/3=1.66666667

What do they mean by 2 as being a remainder..why?

    No, the remainder is 2, the value you give is the fractional part.

    Think back to your first few years at school, you will have been taught something like "five divided by three is one remainder two", the modulo operator is the grown up version of those early math lessons.

    modulus operator to start with and second that .6666...7 is 2/3. Got that? Two thirds. Modulus is the remainder when there is one.
