I need help deciding. Ranger or Silverado?

I'm trying to decide which truck to buy: a 1997 Ford Ranger XLT 4x4 Ext. Cab or a 1991 Chevy Silverado K1500 4x4 Reg. Cab. The Ranger has a 4.0L V6 engine and the Silverado has a 5.0L V8 engine. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

I just bought a '98 Ranger extended cab, two-wheel-drive. My last truck was a '95 S10 and I have a '00 Blazer 4x4. I like both Chevys, but I thought it was kind of ignorant that I had to pull the Blazer's steering box to replace the pitman arm. My dad's full-size Chevy 4x4 is the same way. The Ranger uses a rack and pinion setup that is much easier to deal with. The 4.0 engine is a bit narrower than Chevy's 4.3, so I can replace the plugs in less than 2 hours. The only problem with the extended cab is that you'd better have skinny friends to shove back there. I'm 6 feet, about 235 pounds, and I can just barely squeeze into the back. A later truck with a third door would be easier to get in.

Either truck would be good, but I'd pick the Ranger for ease of service and better fuel mileage.

I am a Chevy Fan but I would get the Extended Cab over a Regular Cab. I need the room but I would eventually trade in the Ford for a Chevy. Just my opinion.

I would make a different choice altogether. Fords were notorious for bad transmissions thru the 90's and Fords are hard to work on. I would stay away from the 91 Chevy because by now it should be a rust bucket. The only caveat here is if you personally knew who you are buying from and are totally sure they won't screw you, either one would be okay if the owner took very good care of the vehicle. Otherwise move on to a much newer model of vehicle with low mileage, unless you are a mechanic or know of a good one you can trust to work on your purchase.
