  • Highway to Hawaii?

I've seen some articles that say that they're thinking about building a highway from California all the way to Hawaii. I see just one problem with that: there's absolutely no land between the two states aside from a few islands off the coast of California. So I'm wondering how they'd be able to build such a highway cuz with the average car lasting 300-400 miles per tank I'm pretty sure no one would wanna walk all the way there with no places to stop. Would they build man-made islands to put up things like rest stops? Or would they just do a concrete platform and pillars like the highway itself? Either way It would definitely be a feat of engineering since it'll be one of the most challenging projects in recent history (assuming they're actually going to build such a highway).

  • Chevy cobalt 2.2 weird noise?

I have a 2010 chevy cobalt ls 2.2 with a manual transmission. Lately, I've been noticing a weird vibration-type sound coming from the engine when I have the a/c going. However, the noise goes away when I push in the clutch pedal, and comes back when release the clutch pedal. Anyone have any idea of what might be happening?

  • Metallica drop tuning their live shows?

I'm sure that all you hardcore metallica fans have noticed that they've been drop tuning a lot of their songs on their live shows, most notably enter sandman and master of puppets. Lately, I've been wondering why. Does it have something to do with James's vocal range changing with age? Or is it something entirely different? I've been wondering for a while and I wanted to know if anyone knows why.

  • Pontiac Grand Am problems?

A coworker of mine has a 1999 Pontiac Grand Am GT and she's been having some issues with it. She said that her car jumps when it shifts and her "check brakes" light is lit up. I was thinking the car shifting might mean a bad torque converter cuz she doesn't hear any noises in regards to that and I was thinking the check brakes light might just be due to a bad sensor cuz when she presses on the pedal it feels fine. She also said she has a couple leaks but doesn't know what's leaking. Do you think it might be related to the transmission jumping?

  • 1997 ford f250 engine and tranny swap?

I've been thinking about getting a mud truck. A good friend of mine suggested that I buy a Ford f250 power stroke and swap the engine for a cummins and the transmission for an allison. I found a 1997 f250 with a 7.3L power stroke and I found a conversion kit to do the engine swap, however I'm having a hard time trying to find a conversion kit for the tranny. Could someone please tell me where I could find one? Also if you know of a good idea for a mud truck I'm all ears!

  • What would it take to do a 4x4 conversion on a 2005 Dodge Ram SRT-10 and how much would it cost?

A friend of mine has a 2005 Dodge Ram SRT-10 and he wants to know what parts he'd need to convert it from 4x2 to 4x4 and how much it would cost for him to do it himself versus having a shop do it for him. He knows that it would take a lot of time and money but he's willing to take on the challenge. He just needs a list of parts and a rough estimate of how much it would cost. Thank you.

  • What would be the most ideal storm chase vehicle?

I'm looking to pursue my dream of being a storm chaser. But I wanna know what vehicle would be ideal for storm chasing. I did some research and found out that the best storm chase vehicles are 4x4 trucks and SUVs. I was thinking maybe a dodge ram or a Ford expedition. But I want to know what would be the best vehicle to use for storm chasing.

  • How would you convert a car from FWD to RWD?

I'm currently the owner of a 1997 Honda Civic Dx Sedan. After college I'm thinking about converting it to RWD because it's kind of annoying to have a FWD car. I love the Honda Civic. It's one of my favorite cars and I'm willing to do what it takes to make it the car of my dreams. I plan to use a 2001 Acura Integra Type-R engine and transmission when I do the engine swap. I read some threads and a lot of them said that I'd have to convert the car from being a front-engine car to a mid-engine car. Is there a way that I could convert my car from FWD to RWD without having to relocate the engine? And also, how much would it cost to have a mechanic do the conversion as opposed to doing it myself? I need detailed answers so I know exactly what I'm up against. I know a conversion like this is no easy task by any means but I think in the end it'll be worth the time, money, and effort. If all you're going to say is "don't do it" or "it's a waste of money" or something along those lines then don't bother answering.

  • How much would it cost to replace the transmission on a 1997 Honda Civic Dx?

I'm the current owner of a 1997 Honda Civic Dx Sedan with an automatic transmission that currently has 214k miles and from time to time the transmission will make a "clunk" sound if it shifts up at low rpm and the frequency of that happening has been increasing over the last few months. I wanna know how much it would cost to swap out the automatic transmission out for a manual transmission myself as opposed to having a shop do it. I know that the price that I'd pay would equal or exceed the value of the car itself. It's just something that I've been curious about for a while now.

  • How much would it cost to bullet proof a car or truck?

I'm currently going to college for a degree in meteorology. My ultimate goal is to be a storm chaser after I graduate. My plan is to have three vehicles: my current vehicle (a 1997 Honda Civic DX Sedan), my dad's truck (which I will hopefully get passed down to me when he gets a bigger truck; it's a 1997 Ford Ranger XLT 4x4 Ext. Cab), and a brand new (or slightly used) large pickup truck (a Ram 3500 Laramie Longhorn 4x4 Mega Cab DRW). Each vehicle will have its own seperate purpose. The Civic will be used for smaller things such as photography and videography of the storm, the Ranger will be used for deploying probes that will monitor the storm and measure things such as wind speed and direction, and the Ram will be used for bigger jobs such as clearing the roads of heavy debris.

What I want to know is how much it would cost to bulletproof each vehicle. I got the idea of bulletproofing chase vehicles after seeing the TIV on a show called Storm Chasers back in 2007.

  • Putting a Civic Si engine in a Civic Dx?

I have a 1997 honda civic dx with 201k miles. Since it has so many miles, I was thinking about swapping out the engine with one that has less miles (I know I can buy another with the kind of money it would cost. I'm just looking to add value to it). I was wondering if I could possibly put in an engine from a Civic si without having to mod anything major. If I can put in an engine from a Civic si, what would i have to upgrade to make up for the power increase?

  • What should I buy first?

I'm going to be starting my freshman year of college this coming fall and I need to start saving up for a car. I've decided that I want both a 2000 Honda Civic and a 1997 Ford Ranger 4x4, but I'm having a hard time deciding which I should start saving up for first. I'm hoping to one day have both of them and fix up and customize one while using the other (the Civic while using the Ranger and vice versa) if and when I have some extra cash. Which should I buy first? Any tips and advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

  • Replacing an automatic transmission with a manual transmission. Is it worth it?

There's a truck I really want to get. I want it to have a manual transmission but I can only find ones with automatic transmissions. Manual transmissions are known for having better gas mileage and lasting longer. In that case, would it be a good idea to just buy the truck with an automatic transmission and replace the transmission with a manual transmission? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
