How can I get good quality video with my crappy camera?

I have a Toshiba BW10 (a pathetic excuse for 1080i). I like the resolution, and the underwater feature is nice, but it isn't great for narrative work in the slightest. The contrast is too high, the low-light is grainy, and I can't manually focus or white-balance.

Getting another camera is out of the question, so how can I optimize the features on this camera to get the best video I possibly can?

    Photography and video is all about light. If you can;t control the camera, control the light.
