My FF is working ok, Chrome isn't my favourite browser, to set it up a lot of settings are not in plane sight? Make sure you have 1 dedicated default browser and deny the others, this avoids confusion with in the PC. When you install they all want to be the default. So in IE (tools>privacy tab) check the box "tell me if IE is not the default"), In FF(tools>privacy tab) set to default or not depending which on you want default FF or chrome, after choice is made restart your PC, while you going through your browsers set you history to be deleted on exit, never saved and in google fro the beginning of time, this will keep you PC up to speed a bit as well as other house keeping. Personally I use IE9 and FF both 32 bit browsers in a 64 bit enviroment, no problems.

press and hold CTRL key while clicking on a link. It will open a new page in new tab rather than a new windows.
Secondly, check the options on both browsers and configure then to open new links in tabs.
